Why writers use a word counter

Essays, articles, cover letters and social posts all come with length expectations. A live word counter lets you watch your count as you write instead of guessing, so you can hit a word limit for a school assignment, trim an article to an editor's brief, or check that a statement fits the space allowed.

This counter updates on every keystroke and shows six numbers at once: total words, characters with and without spaces, sentences, paragraphs, and the longest word in your text. There is nothing to install and nothing to upload — the whole calculation runs on this page, in your browser.

Privacy first: your text is processed only in your browser. It is never sent to a server, saved, or shared. See our privacy page for details.

Frequently asked questions

How does the word counter work?

Type or paste your text into the box and the counts update instantly as you type. A word is any run of characters separated by spaces or line breaks. Everything is calculated in your own browser — your text is never uploaded or stored.

Is this word counter free to use?

Yes. The word counter and every other tool on this site are completely free, with no sign-up, no word limit and no hidden charges.

Is my text private?

Yes. All counting happens locally in your browser using JavaScript. Nothing you type or paste is sent to a server, saved, or shared with anyone. The only thing this site stores is your light or dark theme choice, kept in your own browser so the site reopens the way you left it.

How are sentences and paragraphs counted?

Sentences are counted by splitting the text at full stops, question marks and exclamation marks. Paragraphs are blocks of text separated by a blank line.

Why do word counts sometimes differ between tools?

Different tools treat things like hyphenated words, numbers and apostrophes slightly differently. This counter treats any sequence separated by whitespace as one word, which matches most word processors.

Can I count words in a very long document?

Yes. There is no set word limit. Because the counting runs in your browser, even book-length texts are counted in a fraction of a second.

Can I use this word counter in dark mode?

Yes. Use the sun and moon button at the top of the page to switch between light and dark themes. Your choice is saved in your own browser, applies to every tool on the site, and is the only preference this site stores.
